The Teacher Who Couldn't Read
Published in Audio Cassette by Brehon Publishing Company (01 September, 2001)
Authors: John Corcoran and Carole C. Carson
Average review score:

An amazing story of true curage
This book should be mandatory reading for all teachers and those going into the profession. After reading this book you will have a insight into the secret world of the illiterate. Before the book I imagined the illiterate as people that brought this on themselves by not caring or giving up on the educational system now I see it as it truely is a disability. This book would be great for parents to get an understanding of what children can go through in school and how hard it can be to be a child. This is an amazing story of a man who led a life of lies to protect his intermost secret. I can not say how much I enjoyed this book and how I want everyone to read it. Enjoy!

A Watery Grave

Grave in the Water
Kim and Stella, the main characters, are trying to solve a mystery. They are trying to figure out who killed the Farleys' oldest son. The Farleys' are newcomers in the neighborhood. One of the friends of the oldest son is also killed in the Farleys' swimming pool.
I liked the book because it was fantastic in my opinion. The characters were great and the way the author made Kim and Stella, who are ordinary people, look like they were real detectives.

The Way Home: Ending Homelessness in America
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (December, 1999)
Authors: Jodi Cobb, Nan Roman, Philip Brookman, Jane Slate Siena, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Tipper Gore
Average review score:

I WAS HOMELESS FOR SEVEN YEARS!
The NAEH is a marvelous organiztion for helping the homeless. I downloaded a survival guide from the NAEH. It's incredible! But let's review this book. It is just wonderful! And costly! And I paid $35! You can order it from Amazon.com for only $28. The proceeds go to the National Alliance for Ending Homelessness. There seems to be some misunderstanding about the homeless. And this book has a tinge of that. But it is not as bad as some books on homelessness which deal with the subject. One has to be homeless to really understand. One suffers from what I call the "pyramid effect". This applies to all the poor. And especially the blacks. When you are homeless, your fear is exponential. Simply said, the less your resources, the more your fear will expand. Just imagine a pyramid. Now go down that axis from the center, and you will see that fear expands the more your resources dwindle. Some symtoms that I experienced were the frequent need to urinate. Putting my forefinger down my throat so that I could vomit. This seems to give some release to the fear. One needs to rent a storage bin. This will give one access to a washroom. But one should also "mark" a fast food restuarant for cleaning as well. And you have to keep clean. The NAEH hammers away at this. I am glad the proceeds from this book are going to them. A job? I think I tried for 20 or 30 jobs during this period. And I actually worked! One needs to go through thrift stores and get the feel for buying. A lot of the homeless that I met seem to be women whose spouse died and they simply didn't know how to handle money. I knew one who went insane. I also found that my sexual desire and my craving for junk foods went WAY up! This is to escape the present moment. One of my homeless friends went to prostitutes, got AIDS, and that was it for him. I don't know where he ended up! He just dissapeared. And you have to forget the jobs after awhile. I had a beautiful sports jacket, black dress shoes, nice slacks, hair cut short, and a dummy resume that I had written at the library. But the interviewers can always sense when you are scared. Which you are all the time when you are homeless! I remember their seeing my eyes filled with tension and fear. That's it. Out you go. And it is something you can't fake (your level of fear) unless you take drugs first. Which are deadly. But I did get a job for $4.25 an hour. The money just dissapeared it was so little. The manager kept jumping on me. I yelled back and quit. Getting an "entry level" job while being homeless is much like diving into a barrel of water from 1,000 feet above. The chances are not very good. This book exemplifies an attempt to get at the root cause of homelessness with words and pictures. It suceeds, somewhat. My symtoms started to dissapear when my homelessness ended over three years ago. But three still remain. 1) I don't want any posessions. I might lose them. 2) I don't trust anybody. 3) I don't want to owe anybody anything. It complicates matters. This is a wonderful book. BUY IT! Oh. Vote for Al Gore. I saw Milton Friedman on cable. He stated that the Libertarian Ideal is not yet feasible. Whoever you vote for, good luck! And BUY THIS BOOK!

The Winds of Time
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (March, 1974)
Authors: Barbara Corcoran and Gail Owens
Average review score:

Still memorable two decades later
I read this book when it was first published (23 years ago), and many of the scenes, images, and certainly characters are still vivid. This book was a little eerie, but also very comforting in its own way. It is also reflective of a more trusting world than the one which we currently inhabit. The occasional illustrations were equally haunting. I'm disappointed that The Winds of Time is no longer in print

Use What You've Got, and Other Business Lessons I Learned from My Mom
Published in Hardcover by Portfolio (10 February, 2003)
Authors: Barbara Corcoran and Bruce Littlefield
Average review score:

best book on sales i've read in a long time
if you're in sales or manage salespeople, if you're thinking of starting your own business, come from a large family or want to know what it was like growing up in one squeezed into 4 rooms under the palisades amusement park sign, read this book.

"use what you've got" is like having a personal business coach, for a fraction of the price, and will probably give you a lot more laughs than you'd have in one of those sessions. i for one changed my home answering machine message to sound like both my feet are rooted firmly in the land of the living, so much so i sometimes surprise myself when i call home to leave a msg.

for years i've encouraged people who have had a frustrating job search to just take any job: "look at barbara corcoran: she was a receptionist for a couple of real estate property managers and now she owns her own company!" she's been a hero to me for what she's accomplished. i then met her at a book signing and she is as approachable, enthusiastic and focused in person as she is in the book. these are qualities you'd expect in someone who is a great salesperson, but you don't often find "charming and down-to-earth" in people who've gone as far as she has.

this book is both highly entertaining and practical, loaded with wonderful stories about growing up in a large family and how those dynamics helped transform a a determined young girl into an incredibly successful business woman. there's lots of good business advice, plenty of stories that address the proverbial bumps in the road and how she turned obstacles or failures to her advantage. the addendum is an invaluble sales tool.

¿Use What You¿ve Got¿¿A Roadmap For Doing It!
...

Barbara Corcoran encapsulates extraordinary wisdom and guidance in a mere 250 pages. As a writer and businesswoman, Ms. Corcoran has the ability to keep life, with all its complications, simple and lighthearted. It is through her writing that she fosters encouragement of those that want the same kind of career successes she has experienced. She tells how she was taught to remain true to herself and by so doing she has helped others do the same. Her rise to the challenge of going it alone when that was the only path and charging forward toward her goals in good times and not so good times are testaments to and examples of the fortitude inside us all. At the back of the book is a step-by-step "how-to" section for setting your own business in motion-a hands-on guide that is an excellent reference. "Use What You've Got" is more than a comfortable and inspirational read. It's a bible. Seldom is such a highly successful individual able to tell in such a light, easy and engaging style what they did to get where they got then hand out the tools to get us there too. Barbara Corcoran's The Corcoran Group has become an empire because of these basic life lessons and applications. Barbara and her mother are inspirations and anyone reading this wonderful little, big book will surely be inspired.

I remember her when she was a girl
I went to High School with Barbara and I have just finished reading her book. Her book put a smile on my face and brought back fond memories of growning up in Edgewater, NJ. From Chicky Dayock to Bubsy's grocery store where all the kids in the neighborhood went, to pick up something that their Mom forgot to buy at the A & P in Fort Lee, NJ, She described everything as if I were reliving it again.

I absolutely love knowing that she took New York City by storm, went for it and built an empire unto herself. How fabulous that out of a little, dinky, blue collar town would there rise up from the shadows, a success story like Barbara's.

I read this book nonstop from cover to cover and it was easy reading and fantastic advice that can be applied to just about any business situation.

An Introduction to Logic
Published in Paperback by Hackett Pub Co (October, 1993)
Authors: Morris R. Cohen, Ernest Nagel, and John Corcoran
Average review score:

Best Overview and Introduction to Logic
For the beginner, there's no better book to begin one's excursion into logic, both deductive and inductive, formal and informal, syllogistic and mathematical, propositional as well as predicate calculus. There is excellent competition, such as Bates' Introduction to Logic and Lemmon's book by the same name. But these books are limited in their scope, and not always as didactic and insightful as the Copi work. This book is certainly not exhaustive of all logical norms and forms, but it is quite comprehensive. I know of no other book which is so thoroughly diversified in the treatment of all logical styles and methods, and which does so with greater clarity and elegance of style. I wish this had been my textbook upon taking formal logic courses years ago; it is clearly superior to literally dozens of others that are either too simplistic or over the head of most beginning logicians.

This is the Logic textbook to keep!
After comparing many good logic textbooks, I choose this one as my textbook for my class. From fallacies to Mill's methods, this book presents a well-organized view on each single subject. The only minor problem I have with the book is the way the rules of inference are presented. Nonetheless, this book is still one of the best textbook. The exercises are challenging and practical. Certainly, students should do more when time permits. There are many textbooks you won't miss after you graduate from college. But, this one you will like to keep to graduate school or professional school, and even to your work place.

Essential for Building Analytical Skills
This textbook is the most valuable I've ever read. It covers all the basic stuff, like fallacies, syllogisms, truth-functional logic, and second-order predicate calculus, omitting only cutting edge stuff like modal and fuzzy logic--and gives full, lucid, elegant explanations. What's more, it shows you how logic applies to the real world by using a variety of interesting examples--something MY logic professor never bothered doing. I can guarantee you that, if you read this book carefully from cover to cover and do all the exercises and PRACTICE applying them, you will become a much smarter, more effective person. (Example: after working through this book, I was able to score in the top 1 percentile on the LSAT). Anyone planning on becoming a lawyer, a scientist, or even a journalist will acquire extensive and essential analytical skills by using Copi's magnificent textbook.
